Alchemist ClassPublisher: Dungeon Masters Guild

An alchemist is defined by their ability to transmute materials with arcane magic. They practice their craft scrupulously to perfect it. Most often, an alchemist will transform raw materials into something more useful. However, it is also common that they will infuse an item or substance with a spell for later use. In these cases, the magic typically retains its potency for several hours. With a great deal of hard work and perseverance, master alchemists can sometimes produce items with permanent enchantments.

Because of the sheer breadth of possibility in the arcane arts, the capabilities of alchemists can vary considerably. Most know an assortment of transmutative spells, but individual alchemists will also specialize.

With the specific approval of local lords or barons, some guilds transmute explosives for mining and war. Such alchemists are known as bombardiers.

Others brew salves, anti-venoms, and a variety of other remedies to treat wounds and illnesses. These are known as apothecaries.

A select few offer clandestine services. They may perform enigmatic divinations for power-hungry nobles or scry for thieves, and are commonly called witches.

About the class:
The Alchemist is intended to be an alternative to the Wizard, which is the only intelligence-based class in the PHB. The two classes are similar, but there are two important differences:
1) Alchemists learn spells and simply know them, rather than using a spellbook. They are similar to Bards in that respect.
2) Alchemists can brew potions, which are then usable by any character. This ability is the big, unique feature that differentiates it from the rest.
3) The ability to brew potions that anyone can use required detailed rules (see "Brewing Potions" and "Using Potions" on page 3). The rules are intended to encourage creativity and teamwork, while preventing abuse.
4) The class archetypes vary considerably. The bombardier is by far the most destructive (and the most complex), the apothecary is the most supportive (and the most straight-forward), and the witch is the most exploration-oriented (and my personal favorite).
